Just brought a Philishave HQ 6879 - battery question

Uh-oh. In my estimation, this is either: 1. Some residue that got deposited there while the shaver was manufactured 2. Electrolyte residue from the cells venting when you charged them, since they sat unused for such a long time 3. Electrolyte residue from a leaking cell 4. Some combination...

Just brought a Philishave HQ 6879 - battery question

If this was my shaver, I'd go through a couple dozen charge/discharge cycles to see if battery performance improves before replacing the cells. They may only need some "exercise" to rejuvenate them after such a long slumber.

    Philips shaver cutting me!

That comb assembly does look suspect. I've been pleased with the Bechy aftermarket HQ55 heads/cutters, available on Amazon. They're currently US$17.97 for a pack of six.

Do vintage shaver blades lose their sharpness over time?

With a Philishave, I wouldn't worry about it. The heads sharpen the blades continuously during use. Before first use, I'd give the head asemblies a shot of lubricant and run the shaver for, say, two minutes to remove any oxidation "bloom" that may have settled on the cutting edges. Gong...

    Pre shave

Welcome, Charlie! I'll echo Jim's advice above--a clean face is a must for a good electric shave. If showering before your electric shave, St. Ives Apricot Scrub is a facial cleanser that I've found to be very helpful.

    Nice job! I like it.

How long can a shaver really last?

I haven't replaced the cells in any of my shavers. In the case of the 650TX, the shaver was getting shabby-looking by the time the cells failed, and I expected to need a new shaver soon--which turned out to be true. With the 6613X, I found the overall performance of the 6423 LC to be superior...

How long can a shaver really last?

In my experience, it's hard to know which shavers will last, but the corded shavers seem to have the edge in general longevity. Anecdotally, I had a late 1980s Philips 650TX rechargeable and 1990s Philips 710RL corded shaver that both had their drive gears fail after about three years of use...

Electric Shave of the Day (ESOTD)

25-26 July 2024 Gave myself a nasty nick on my chin Monday while blade shaving. Using electrics while it heals up... Face brush-washed with Van der Hagen Natural brush and Stirling Mentholated Shave Soap Face air-dried while I took a shower Pinaud Clubman talc as pre-shave, applied with...

    Rotary or Foil?

The Afta Pre-Electric Shave lotion works well for me, and I much prefer it to Lectric Shave and Vi-Jon Pre-Electric.

    Rotary or Foil?

I find that with my Philips rotaries, a useful approach is to listen carefully while shaving. When audio feedback indicates that the cutters aren't picking up any more stubble, turn the razor off and take a break for a minute. Then, give your face a final once-over using the lightest possible...

    Arc 5 Battery

The Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery in your Arc 5 only has a finite number of discharge/recharge cycles, typically around 300-500. Charging it every day would wear out the cell in less than 2 years. Charging it every 3 days would drain your cell down to 70% at the end of your third shave...

Review: Bechy aftermarket heads/cutters for Philips HQ55+ applications

My Philips 6423 LC shaver has a set of well-maintained, Philips HQ55+ heads that have seen about four years of use. I'm diligent about doing a five-minute self-sharpening cycle after their weekly cleaning and lubrication routine, and they still provide me with outstanding shaves. Genuine...

Electric Shave of the Day (ESOTD)

It's the Remington-branded foil that turned out to be junk, with a side rail insert that was loose and bent irreparably during installation. On the other hand, the ShaverAid aftermarket foil snapped right into place much easier than any Remington foil I've installed ever did. It's no big loss...

Electric Shave of the Day (ESOTD)

Sadly, that review won't be forthcoming. The Remington SP40 foil that I just received was so poorly made, I wasn't able to install it.

    Norelco series 2000 battery replacement

Yes, you should be good to go. It's tempting to put a higher-capacity cell in there, but try to match the capacity of the original. The cell is probably 1.2V.

    Norelco series 2000 battery replacement

Also, if it does take a Li-Ion cell, you're going to have to determine if you need a protected or unprotected cell.

    Norelco series 2000 battery replacement

There should be some kind of notation on the existing cell denoting whether it's Li-Ion, NiMH, or NiCd, and also indicating the cell's capacity in mAh. If it's indeed an NiMH cell, you've got tons of options for a solder-tab AA NiMH cell. I've had good luck with Tenergy cells.

    Norelco series 2000 battery replacement

According to Philips, your shaver uses a Lithium-Ion battery: https://www.usa.philips.com/c-p/S1560_81/norelco-shaver-2100-dry-electric-shaver-series-2000 Don't put a NiMH cell in there. The cell would be destroyed in very short order by the Li-Ion charging circuitry, probably ruining your...
