No time for elaborate shaving routine anymore - help!

Just had my first kid three months ago and my entire morning routine has been completely turned upside down. Before the baby I had a solid 20-minute shaving routine with hot towel prep, quality shaving cream, and a careful wet shave that left me looking sharp for work.


Now I'm lucky if I get five minutes in the bathroom before the little guy starts crying or needs something. My wife is exhausted from night feedings so I try to handle the morning stuff, but that means my grooming routine has taken a major hit. I've been using disposable razors and just rushing through it, which leaves me looking sloppy and getting razor burn half the time.


I'm thinking about switching to electric but I've never used one before and don't know where to start. I need something that's going to give me a decent shave in under five minutes without a bunch of prep work or cleanup. Budget isn't huge since we've got baby expenses now, but I'm willing to spend some money if it means I can look professional at work again.


I've heard good things about both Braun and Panasonic but honestly I don't have time to research every model out there. What works for other busy dads who need to get out the door quickly? Wet/dry capability would be nice since sometimes I barely have time to dry off after a quick shower.


Any recommendations for someone making the switch from traditional shaving would be really appreciated.

Dave, congratulations on the new baby! You're definitely not alone, as lots of new dads go through the same thing with their routines changing significantly. No one electric razor works for everyone. Factors such as hair type, skin sensitivity, and face shape all play a role here in terms of what works best. What is perfect for one busy dad might not work at all for another.

With that out of the way, for your situation, I'd suggest having a look at the Braun Series 5 or Panasonic Arc3. Both are wet/dry so you can shave in the shower if needed, and they're fast enough for a quick morning routine. The Series 5 runs around $90. The Arc3 is usually around $140. If your budget is tight, the Philips Norelco 3500 is $48 new on eBay. I just looked it up. As with all electric razors, it will take two or three weeks to adjust to the new shaving method.

My congratulations as well I am lucky....all of that is behind me. I agree with Jim but would add that you still need some prep and in order to function to its maximum you need to have regular cleaning/maintenance of the shaver. That can be done when you have time. The shaves will definately be quicker. If you have to rush....a preshave lotion will definately improve the quality of the shave if you are shaving dry.
