I went with foil here, since I shave my head only, being bearded. Foils work best on my head. With that said, when I do go without the beard, rotaries work best on my face.

Honestly, it's a toss-up for me in terms of shave quality. I went with rotaries as it's possible for me to get much longer service life out of a set of rotary heads/cutters than out of a foil assembly.

StevieG,

That sounds great. The Philips 2000 series is a solid choice and should give you a good introduction to rotary razors. Rotary razors can feel quite different from foil razors like the Arc 5, so it’ll be interesting to see how you like the change.

It’s fantastic that you got a deal on it. Trying out different types of electric razors is always a good way to find what works best for you. Keep us posted on your experience with the Philips 2000 once you’ve had a chance to use it!

First go with the Phillips 2500. A world apart from the Arc5. Much lighter and not in the same league in build quality. Shave is not as close but that could be my technique. I got it off eBay brand new in box for $21. I will try it a couple of more times and may PIF it if not satisfied.

Much better results today. Still not as close as the Arc 5.
I find that with my Philips rotaries, a useful approach is to listen carefully while shaving. When audio feedback indicates that the cutters aren't picking up any more stubble, turn the razor off and take a break for a minute. Then, give your face a final once-over using the lightest possible shaver pressure against your face.

Are you using any kind of pre-shave lotion or other preparation, such as talc?

I did not care for Lectric Shave.
I used the Arc 5 today. Very comfortable and closer than the Norelco except on the neck. I am going to use the 2500 a few more times to give it a fair chance. I also have my eye on a Remmington F5-5800.

It's good to hear that the Arc 5 provided a comfortable and close shave, even if the neck area was a bit tricky. Universally, foils seem to perform poorly on the neck with a few exceptions. Giving the 2500 a few more tries sounds like a fair approach to see how it stacks up.

The Remington F5-5800 is definitely worth keeping an eye on. I am thinking of buying one, as well. Keep us posted on your experiences with both razors.

Best shave yet with the 2500. Not quite as close as the Arc 5 except for the neck which is closer. I skipped the pre-shave and used it corded. It is noticeably more powerful plugged in. I’ll go back to the pre-shave tomorrow and see if there is a difference. My plan is to stick with the 2500 for the next few days without going back to the Arc5. I like that the 2500 is lighter and less bulky and significantly quieter.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear you had your best shave yet with the 2500. It's interesting that it gives a closer shave on the neck compared to the Arc 5 and performs better when used corded.

Sticking with the 2500 for a few days sounds like a solid plan. The fact that it's lighter, less bulky, and quieter definitely adds to its appeal. Keep us posted on how it goes with the pre-shave tomorrow.

Still prefer the 2500. Very comfortable and shaves close enough with no post shave irritation. Tried both the Braun 3040S and Remington F5-5800. Both shaved extra close but not comfortable. Also the noise was excruciating. The Remmy has terrible ergonomics being quite large and heavy. I am happy that I experimented because now I know that Rotaries work better for me. I did have an Arc 5 and sold it. The Braun and Remmy went back to Amazon. I don’t have an urge to spend the $ to try the Braun Series 9 as yet. I just got a good deal on a new Phillips 3600 that is supposed to shave like the 2500 but can be used wet. I will post an update after I use it a few times.

It sounds like you've really dialed in on what works best for you with the 2500. It's great to hear that it's delivering comfortable shaves without irritation—sometimes, finding the right razor is a process of trial and error. I had high hopes for the Braun Series 9, but after my own experience, I can’t recommend it anymore. My Braun died after less than four months, which was really disappointing.

It just goes to show that price means nothing—having an expensive razor doesn’t guarantee a better shave. It’s all about finding what works best for you, and I’m glad the Philips works so well for you. The Philips 3600 sounds promising, especially with the wet-shave option. I’m looking forward to hearing how it compares to the 2500 for you.

I'll also add my thoughts on the Braun Series 9 in the existing thread so others can be aware of my experience.
