Been using the Remington F5-5800 for two years - solid budget option

Since retiring I've had to watch my spending more carefully, so when my old Braun finally died I couldn't justify dropping $200+ on a replacement. Picked up the Remington F5-5800 for around $50 at Walmart and honestly it's been a pleasant surprise. I know Remington doesn't have the best reputation, but this thing has held up way better than I expected. Been using it daily for over two years now and it's still cutting fine. The battery life is decent - I charge it maybe twice a week. The pivoting head works well enough, though it's not as flexible as the expensive razors obviously. The cleaning is straightforward - just pop off the heads and rinse under hot water. I replace the cutters and foils about once a year for $25, which fits my budget much better than some of the pricier replacement parts I see mentioned here. Is it going to give you the same shave as a Series 9 or Arc5? No. But for someone on a fixed income who just needs a reliable daily shave, it's been doing the job without any major complaints. Sometimes the simpler option is the right option. Anyone else had good experiences with budget Remington models, or did I just get lucky with this one?

Absolutely, Frank, and welcome aboard. I bought a Remington PF7855 a while ago, which would definitely fall in line in terms of being a budget model. I'm happy with it. It shaves my head very well. Being bearded, I only shave my head, but maybe one day I'll shave my beard as a test with my Philips OneBlade and then use the Remington PF7855 on my face, as well. Glad you signed up.

Hi Frank: No, the 5800 is a solid model for its price I think. I bought one 3 years ago (and Remington sent me another gratis) and I've used them both as well as the 5100 with the similar head/cutter...sometimes viewed as the "indestructible" model as it has a 3 year warranty. The 5800 is a bit harder to keep the outside clean because of the chrome finish, but the gauge works very well. The only criticism I've heard is that it is a little heavy, but I don't have a problem with it. After every charge, I turn the foil holder around and blades too to spread the wear to different face angles. Some of the other similar models like the F3 series are very similar but the run times are a bit shorter. Good luck!
