I introduced the first version of this forum to the Internet in 2002 via free-hosted forum hosting. It later crashed in approximately 2009, and I revived it briefly in 2021, and then again in 2024. It's here to stay!
I'd consider myself to be at an advanced level of electric shaving. I received the Philishave HS555 back in 1993.

Welcome to Electric Razor Rap, Mucksiegooma! Great to have an experienced electric shaver user here, and nice collection of Braun razors.
Regarding the Wahl 9818L switch cover - replacement parts for older Wahl trimmers can be tricky to find. A few suggestions:
Contact Wahl directly - Their customer service is usually pretty good about helping with parts for older models, even discontinued ones. You can reach them at 1-800-767-9245 or through their website contact form. They may be able to sell you the part directly or point you to an authorized service centre.

Check eBay - Search for "Wahl 9818L parts" or "Wahl stainless steel trimmer parts." Sometimes you can find people parting out broken units or selling individual components. Local appliance repair shops - Some small appliance repair places keep parts for common brands like Wahl or can fabricate simple plastic pieces like switch covers.

If the switch itself still works and you just need the cover for aesthetics/protection, you might also consider using a small piece of heat shrink tubing or electrical tape as a temporary fix until you locate the proper part. Let us know if you find a solution - it might help other members looking for parts for older Wahl models. What Series 9 model do you have? Always interested to hear from longtime Braun users.

Based in the UK. I have been here for a little while. I dabbled with electrics many years ago and stopped after the Remington Microscreen. I have been a confirmed wet shaver for many years....both DE and Straight. About a year ago I had a medical scare and re visited electric shavers. Well.....technology has moved on! As a retired person with a less demanding expectation I have been prepared to experiment so I have brought over my wet shaving ethos.....lots of razors and I prefer to wet shave using my existing soaps and creams. I have 2 Braun shavers.....Series 3 and 5. Panasonics 3,4,and 5. Philips 3, 5, and i9 and numerous Shavers of Chinese origin. I will post about those later as they are better than I would have expected. I am probably lucky I want to shave daily as a good shave is not an insurmountable challenge. Hope to see more people join in and make this a community!!

Hi Culcreuch: I lived in the UK for five years and I made the assumption you lived there based on your writings. Seems Remington was the third child in Britain compared to Philips and Braun in the 1980s, but when I lived there I converted to electric and never turned back. Enjoy your posts.

Guess I should add my name to the list here. Based in Las Vegas (as retired military), and have 20 shavers in my collection, all 3 brands, foil and rotary, plug-in and battery. I use all 20 on a rotating schedule. All new when obtained, one-fourth were free, another quarter I bought cheaply, and the other half I bought at different places. Hard to find new vintage shavers, but the Remington XLR series, to me, shaves the smoothest, and because of its high RPM motor, very fast, plus no battery issues, so I have a few of them. I've learned a lot already in the few months I've been a member on this site. I found Culcreuch's advice helpful in using dishwashing (or washing up) liquid to clean my shavers...so much better than plain water, and the parts come out like new with no residue. The cheapest shaver I have is a 13-year-old (Remington F3790), was free, and still working. Most expensive is the Philips i9000 Prestige Ultra which is great, though I'm glad I didn't get the extra costly accessories. It's good to be able to discuss a topic that many people find less exciting than other things people talk about. One thing our Shavermeister, Jim, mentions I've found to be so important, especially for new members...clean and lubricate your shaver, and try to always get OEM parts. Many of us have had experience with aftermarket items with less than stellar results. Enjoy everyone's contributions.

I contacted Wahl about the switch cover and they are sending one out to me, it seems like free of charge. I am supposed to receive it today.
I'm glad to get such great service from Wahl.

What branch of the military were you. I am ex UK Royal Army Medical Corps.
Wow, impressive! I understand even within the British military, that organization is highly respected. I was in the USAF for 30 years active service. Loved Britain so much I volunteered for a second tour (first one was in Oxon (Oxfordshire for those not familiar); second tour in Suffolk. Tried to move as far from the US base as I could so lived near Stony Stratford on my first tour. Also lived in Germany 3 years, last tour overseas was Hawai'i (which is considered overseas by the US military). My wife and I were one of the few Yankee couples that had a three-minute private conversation with the Prince of Wales (now King Charles). That was the highlight of my tour! He lamented that the Government would not bend the rules to allow him to import a Jaguar from the U.S., that had emissions controls on it (when British models didn't have them). You seem extremely knowledgeable about shavers and shaving and I enjoy reading your posts. I'm considered a fanatic about shavers by my family, but at my age (78) I don't care. My now deceased wife and I used to say if we were 20 years younger, we'd go back to Britain to live, though Canada Is great too. The only thing I don't miss in Britain is the VAT which our RAF officers here in Las Vegas say is very high (like 20%). Take care.

The message was directed to @Shaverman and I believe that as a social forum it is pertinent. I will stand corrected if Jim says otherwise.
I was in the Minnesota Army National Guard.
Great. My son was in the Texas Army National Guard for awhile. I just spoke to some old friends in PA, and he served over 25 years, mostly in the Army National Guard. He didn't have enough time active to get VA medical benefits, but he can use Tricare (which is the secondary payer for active/retired who use Medicare.) Welcome to the forum. I'm finding there is a wealth of "shaver knowledge" on this site.

Hey everyone, Philip here.

I'm based in Columbus, Ohio and have been using electric razors on and off for about 10 years now. Currently using a Braun Series 7 7085cc that I picked up in 2023, and before that I had a cheaper Remington that lasted maybe 3 years before it died.

I found this forum while researching and figured I'd stick around since there's actually good discussion here instead of just sponsored reviews and marketing BS.

I'd say I'm somewhere between intermediate and experienced with electric shaving. I know the basics and have tried a few different brands over the years, but I'm always learning new maintenance tips and techniques.

Main things I'm interested in are long-term reliability comparisons between brands, real-world battery life experiences, and whether the super expensive flagship models are actually worth it versus mid-range options.

Looking forward to contributing where I can and learning from people who've been doing this longer than me.

Philip

Hi Philip! Welcome to the forum. Have been to Columbus many times carting my daughter from Dayton to Ohio State.

I'll give two very unscientific responses to your interests. I don't know if there is a measurement or test regarding reliability of the brands. I've had some Brauns die out in three years, and some Remingtons that have lasted 14 years (both rechargeable). Plug-ins seem to do better as no battery to deal with. But I can't personally attribute my experience to any brand over the other. One thing that will help your shaver longevity is something you'll find many of us discuss on this forum; i.e., maintaining your shaver (cleaning, lubricating). Some of us do that religiously after each shave. A clean shaver gives a better shave, and less wear and tear on the shaver parts and less resistance which helps the battery. There are many sites that talk about keeping your lithium-ion battery in good shape as well. Personally, I subscribe to the Apple idea of the 20-80 range on my iPhone, but usually charge my shavers to 100% before I use them. Others might have different approaches.

Secondly, I think you'll find people who will buy the super-expensive flagship models as they want all the features that they offer. Some people like cleaning stations, while others (like me) prefer manual cleaning. But beyond that, there are some differences in models within the same series. For example, the Philips 9000 Presitige is in the upper-end of Philip's price range, but the i9000 Prestige Ultra, which has a completely different-designed head unit, costs a bit more, but includes several other features, some more convenient than useful. Fortunately, through Philips, I got that unit but not the extra accessories like a cleaning station, or extra attachments which I wouldn't use. This saved a good bit on the price. I guess I would also add that I would not discount buying a new shaver from the manufacturer. I've received some of the best prices and extended warranties by dealing with the manufacturer directly (and occasionally a free shaver).

Beyond the "big 3" manufacturers (Braun, Philips, and Remington), there are other manufacturers which some on the forum have tried. Very importantly, I would read the reviews of models you might be interested in, which you can find on Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, etc. Good luck!

Hello,

My name is Phil and I am a shaveaholic. I live near Brisbane Australia and I enjoy wet shaving with an electric shaver. I have been wet shaving (DE, SE & straights) for sixty-three years, However, my hands have begun to tremble this past year, so using sharp implements is no longer an option.

I have owned a couple of electrics (Braun and Panasonic) for several years and took them out of storage several months ago. I have recently purchased a few more to try out.

Looking forward to contributing to the forum.

Hi Phil. Good to see you and welcome! I think we have bumped into each other on a different shaving forum.

Hi Phil: Welcome to our forum. Have spent some time in Sydney but never made it to Brisbane. Like you I feel a bit uncomfortable using blades and wet shaving...went to electric in 1985 in Germany. Worked with RAAF officers in Hawai'i. This is a great site with knowledgeable people as well as people interested in hearing new ideas. Welcome again.
