Philips Norelco 9700 replacement heads are insanely expensive - worth it?

My Philips Norelco 9700 is telling me it's time to replace the shaving heads and I just looked up the price. The SH90 replacement heads are $70-80 depending where you buy them. That's almost half what I paid for the whole razor on sale.

I've had the razor for about 18 months and it's been great, but this replacement cost is making me question whether I should have gone with a different brand. My buddy has a Panasonic and his replacement heads are like $45.

The razor still works but the shave quality has definitely dropped off in the last few months. Takes longer to get a clean shave and occasionally pulls hairs instead of cutting them.

My question is - are the official Philips replacement heads actually worth the premium price or can you get away with cheaper third-party ones? I've seen some on Amazon for $30-40 but the reviews are all over the place. Some people say they work fine and others claim they're garbage quality.

Has anyone here used aftermarket replacement heads for Philips razors? Do they actually work or should I just bite the bullet and pay for the genuine Philips ones?

Really trying to figure out if this razor is worth keeping long-term or if the maintenance costs are going to make it more expensive than just buying a new razor every couple years.

Hello Nick,

I believe that the SH90 heads have been replaced by the SH91 heads (https://www.documents.philips.com/assets/20220603/f6d1b3c673c84149be6eaea90184609d.pdf). If you are happy with the shaves from the 9700 then I would keep it and replace the heads. A new razor every couple of years is quite an expense. Personally, I would spend the money on OEM (Philips) heads and avoid the ones (third party) which are usually termed "compatible".

Thorough cleaning after every shave and lubricating the cutters at least once a week can extend the life of the heads.

Cheers,

Phil
