Travelling with your shaver - what do you use?

I’m currently working in healthcare and shaving patients is occasionally part of my job role. I noticed that most men (of all ages) don’t have a dedicated case or storage unit for their electric shaver, I.e. most just seem to throw the shaver in their Dopp kit/toiletry bag with no protection against whatever is inside.

I fully understand that not everyone is as obsessive about this as us, but a significant number of these patients have more “high end” shavers like the Philips 5000 or 9000 series, and these just get tossed in the luggage like an old shoe!

I’ve flown internationally with a few of my shavers and as a minimum I use some budget hard cases from Amazon, which held up nicely (see photos below). Only on one occasion where I brought my philishave 5426 away with me did I not use the hard case, though I still used the cloth bag that came with the razor, and I just had it in my carry on bag. If I was checking luggage I would almost certainly use the hard case.

I also appreciate that older shavers tend to be a bit more ‘bulletproof’, like my Philishave 3405 was made at least 30 years ago and still works perfectly, although I haven’t travelled with it yet.

What do you guys use?

Thanks,

R

Well, Rmac, I suspect it depends on what shaver you have. My over 30-year-old Remington XLR and DA series shavers are new, so I keep them in the cases they came in if I take them to travel, as well as for storing at home. But my newer F-series Remingtons and 1000 Philips don't have cases, so, like you, I bought a few cases on Amazon. My Philips 6800 and 9000 Prestige Ultra came with their own custom cases, so I use those too.

But I agree that any shaver, especially a "higher end" shaver, should have some sort of protection and not just be thrown in luggage or a gym bag. Combs, foils, and cutters can easily be damaged, and even if they have protective plastic head covers, those covers can fall off. I have heard of some people not wanting to spend money on cases, so they just wrap their shaver in their clothes that they pack, but for me, any shaver that I want to use and keep in good condition, deserves its own case. Besides, one could easily drop the shaver while unpacking or unfolding the clothes from the luggage, and the damage could be more expensive than a case. I personally would not use just a cloth bag for a shaver, as I would think that doesn't give it adequate protection, as luggage is routinely thrown onto and off planes as well as at baggage carousels.

So, I would continue what you and I have done...buy cases (like on Amazon) for any shaver that doesn't come with its own dedicated case...but especially for one that is more high end. If or when the shaver is no longer usable, the case will still likely be.

I agree with Shaverman. My parents taught me to take care of my toys, so I have a hard case for any razor that I decide to travel with.

The "Manscaped" did not even arrive with a felt bag. I immediately purchased a hard case from Aliexpress. BTW, it's a great travel razor and doesn't take up much room. I use it for 3-4 day weekends away.

I usually buy cases from AliExpress. They are zippered, and very similar to Phil's Manscaped case. I remember that in the 70s, 80s and early 90s, the Philips razors, at least, even the budget models, all came with hard plastic cases. I miss those days.

I brought a very similar case from Amazon for my Panasonic ES-RS10, it was marketed as being made for the Braun travel shaver but the Panasonic, although a bit smaller than the case itself, fits perfectly in the mesh pocket along with its cleaning brush. It also fits the larger ES 3831 travel shaver but is a bit of a squeeze and quite a bit heavier TBH.

My hunch is that some cases are more costly than a basic travel shaver, so it might be easier just to get a travel shaver you can throw between your clothes in a suitcase. Some of my newer shavers did not come with a case, but if I take one of them on a trip, I try to use one of the many cases I have for other shavers.
