Electric Shave of the Day (ESOTD)

I have tried three different pre-shaves (Williams, Speick and Blue Stratos) and they all make my hands and face feel greasy so now I just use any cream or stick that can be applied without a brush. My current favourite is Palmolive. Put a dab on my wet hands, rub my hands together and apply to my wet face.

Yes, agreed about certain pre-shaves. I haven't tried Blue Stratos...can't seem to get that in the U.S.? I've tried Speick, Afta, Lectric Shave, Tabac and a few others. Lectric Shave is probably the greasiest of the bunch, but I actually really like it because it makes the razor slide smoothly over my face as I shave.

I usually also use a cream after I put the pre-shave on....but it's probably not necessary to do both.

If you're considering purchasing a rotary, then the Prestige Ultra is the one to get. Shaves nearly as close as the Braun S9 Pro+ and very comfortable. Excellent ergonomics, quiet and mine came with a 7-year warrantee after I registered it online with Philips. The only thing I don't like is the separate trimmer attachment. But then I do have a dedicated Wahl trimmer for my sideburns and goatee if needed. I find the Braun is a closer head shaver.

Hi Jazzphile: Welcome! My Prestige Ultra is the latest purchase and is the most expensive of my 8 rotaries. I prefer foil for overall smoothness and have more of them, but the rotaries are great for beard growth beyond one day.

The Ultra is the best of my rotary shavers. The SH91 heads clearly are superior to the SH30 and SH60 heads I have in my other Philips rotaries. I found a lot of the features of the Ultra, though, were kind of gimmicky, so I shut off the color ring and the light up charging stand. The other features I find useful such as battery percentage remaining, as well as a notification to deep clean the shaver. I usually deep clean after the second or third shave, and I bought extra retainer rings as they could wear out from frequent use.

Though I bought this at a 25% discount directly from Philips, and got a 7-year warranty from them, I have a lingering concern that the head that you pull off to easily clean could become a bit loose after awhile. It is challenging to deep clean the shaver without taking off the head. As other members have recommended, when I deep clean I use dishwashing soap as that quickly and thoroughly takes away grease, lubricating oil, and hair better than just plain water.

Besides lubricating the combs and cutters, I occasionally lubricate the spring that holds the head on as well as the push button in front that allows opening the chamber cover.

Of my 20 shavers, this is the "fanciest" and best-cutting rotary; however, due to the thin nature of foils on foil shavers, the closeness of a rotary isn't quite as close as a foil. Of course, if I get lazy and don't want to shave one day, the rotary shavers do a much better job with that than foils, at least for me. I have gone three days without shaving and it works well.

At almost 80, I'm set in my ways, but when I go to the gym to work out, I use the Philips 1100 plug-in only shaver, or my Remington R50 rotary plug in. I don't want to have to wait an hour at the gym to charge a battery shaver that dies, but more importantly, here in Las Vegas we routinely get up to 115-120F in the summer, and a battery shaver doesn't survive long sitting in a gym bag in the car, especially if you're making a side trip before you go home.

For around $150, the Ultra is an excellent shaver with helpful, easy-to-understand features. Again. the SH91 heads are a major plus compared to other replacement parts.

Finally, one important note. When you look at the Prestige Ultra compared to the regular Prestige line, you''ll see that Philips reduced the size of the platforms the cutters/combs use. This was a tremendous benefit as many people felt the older platforms were interfering with shaving around the nose and mouth.

I'd recommend the Ultra for those already familiar with rotary shavers. Compared to dual-screen foils like the Remington Microscreen, it may not feel as close or smooth, but it certainly is, in my opinion, the best of today's rotary shavers. Note: The $150 I paid for the Prestige Ultra was for the more basic model, with Philips 25% discount. They also added the 7-year warranty which includes everything but the battery. Thanks.

Thank you both Shaverman and Phil Harmonica for your responses. And Shaverman especially for the in depth background review.

Closeness is important to me and I love the Arc6 for that, followed closely by the 9 Pro Plus with the 96m head. Sounds like the Norelco is still behind the Braun from your comments.

I no longer often grow 3 days of beard so it might not be for me.

In the past I've had Norelco rotaries (not high end ones like this) and I almost always got skin irritation at the bottom of my neck around the Adam's Apple and along that line horizontally.

Do either of you experience any of that rotary irritation?

Like you Shaverman, if I got one I'd go for the more basic version without all of the accessories.

Thanks!

I tend to get irritation in the same place from most rotaries, though less with the Prestige Ultra. Under the neck is sensitive and I guess thinner skin than elsewhere. One of the most knowledgeable people I know with a well-regarded site (Shaver Check) once mentioned to me that using powder stick (or even baby powder) can take away the dampness and keep the whiskers upright. Some people use Williams Lectric Shave and it is highly regarded as it has been around for decades. I tend not to experience any razor burn with foil shavers even though their thin foil allows a close shave. I generally find if I shave at home rather than the gym, I don't have to use powder stick as, for me, the lack of humidity makes the shaver glide smoother. The site (Shaver Check) is run by Ovidiu Nicolae. He resides in Europe I believe where there tends to be more variety and shaver options than here (kind of like automobiles). Good luck.

I have scoured his site for weeks now. 🤣🤣

The single most comprehensive shaving website there is. His depth of knowledge and the quality of his reviews are off the charts.

Thought I'd mention this. I believe Philips does offer a free tryout period. If after so many days you don't like the shaver, you can return it for a refund. I think the catch is you have to pay to send it back. Check with them. That way, if you don't like it, you're not stuck with it.

Yes, and he's answered my personal questions. Again, check out Philips' return policy if you want to try it. Good luck, Jazzphile!

Today's shave. I'm continuing to check out and test travel shavers, and received two from Japan yesterday via Fedex.

Lectric Shave Pre-Shave (which I'm realizing is my favorite pre-shave)
Panasonic ES4815p travel razor (Two AA batteries, dual foils and blades)
Speick After-Shave Balsam (I tend to favor thicker balsams rather than thinner lotions for after-shave)

Yesterday I tested the Topwill travel razor. Today it was the Panasonic. This is brand new, my first shave with it, it's an older model and I have to say I'm surprised by how well this unit shaved, operated, how well it's constructed, its ergonomics, etc. The foils are narrow at the top rather than rounded like some larger shavers out there. But you can get a very precise shave with this razor around the ears, under the nose, above and around the lips, etc. You do not need much pressure at all to get closeness. I have a bit of a tendency to get razor burn and did yesterday due to too much pressure. Today I was conscious of using very light pressure with this Panasonic and it worked very well. I'm impressed by the closeness and comfort of the shave with this battery operated travel razor. Based on size and power, it takes a bit longer to get a complete shave with this compared to my Panasonic Arc6 or Braun 9 Pro Plus, but for travel this would be a perfect razor. Also, it's an equally close shave to my Braun 9 Pro Plus and yesterday's Topwill. Surprising and good. It's also a wet/dry razor and I'll try a wet shave with this next.

Speick Pre-Shave Lotion
Speick Shaving Cream (tube)
Braun 9 Pro Plus (96m head)
Speick Post-Shave Lotion
Taylor of Bond Street After-Shave Balm (Sandalwood)

Using a new 96m head after having a nearly new 94m head on the 9 Pro Plus, which I swapped out to one of my other Brauns. I can say definitively that the 96m shaves closer than the 94m. Nearly as close as the Panasonic Arc6.

Gamma+ Boosted
Lectric Shave
Duke Cannon Big Softy Shaving Cream
Cella Aftershave Balm (red tube)

I have to say, I've never had a closer electric shave than with the Gamma+. I realize it's mostly for pros / barbers, but using this on the face after 1.5 days of growth, it is just like using a blade. The risk with this razor, which I've used 3 times now, is some level of irritation post shave. If you press too hard it will either micro-cut or irritate the face.

That said, it is a 3 blade foil razor with a cutter in the middle that gets the longer hairs like a Braun would. Its 11,000 RPM motor is strong and it just mows thru the beard as you'd expect from a pro product. And it's wet/dry.

Fully charged it provides for 3 hours of use so it would be a great vacation razor as well. UBC-C charging too.

Amazingly close and comfortable with shaving cream if you apply just the right level of pressure (light). I now get how to use this razor after trying it 3 times. First two times I had some burn.

This is even closer than a Panasonic Arc6 with new head / blades.
